Well, that startup speed is nothing short of remarkable. Took some MBR/GPT juggling and ignoring of suggestions for crappy adware-loaded software to complete a simple diskpart command, but she's up and running.

many thanks for the advice & support, as always. Who needs PC world?

Where were the adware things from?  I thought this was a standard Windows install - no extra software required?
Why did you need to use Diskpart?  Windows media creation tool should create any partitions/volumes required.
That Argos thing seems a strange bit of kit.  Is it a 2.5 - 3.5 adaptor - but also a 2.5" USB enclosure?  Even in the enclosure I wouldn't expect software to see the blank SSD until it had been formatted.  Lack of any instructions telling you this is really poor.  It will work for data transfers from other 2.5 disks though, via USB.
As for the tray, many years back when I still had a Desktop, I just sat the SSD in a tray in the case - it shouldn't really go anywhere. 😂
Told you the performance gives an amazing difference.

It was just on a website I found to refresh my memory on how to convert from MBR to GPT. It wouldn't install onto the drive as it was the wrong type, but most sites try to convince you to download their pointless software, but in the next breath show you how to do it in diskpart. It may have been the formatting I did the other day that threw a tiny spanner in, but all good now.

SanDisk Extreme SSDs are “worthless,” multiple lawsuits against WD sayArs cited in two SanDisk SSD failure lawsuits filed yesterday.Quote:
On Thursday, two more lawsuits were filed against Western Digital over its SanDisk Extreme series and My Passport portable SSDs. That brings the number of class-action complaints filed against Western Digital to three in two days.

In May, Ars Technica reported about customer complaints that claimed SanDisk Extreme SSDs were abruptly wiping data and becoming unmountable. Ars senior editor Lee Hutchinson also experienced this problem with two Extreme SSDs. Western Digital, which owns SanDisk, released a firmware update in late May, saying that currently shipping products weren't impacted. But the company didn't mention customer complaints of lost data, only that drives could "unexpectedly disconnect from a computer."
I didn't know WD owned Sandisk now. Also I would have thought those 2 brands were reliable ones :(
