The latest update of Google maps on Android now let's you download for offline use.

Great, you can now get lost offline as well.

The great Google just sent me down a deserted dead end today. Looking for the Hard Rock hotel in Tampa. Hardly an insignificant landmark and in their home country as well.

Other than now being an obvious 'download for offline use' option, how does it vary from the previous functionality I used?  For a while you've been able to select a place and select 'pre-cache area' and it did the same thing.  Maybe it's because you can do a larger area?  The other option is 10miles square around the selection (but you could then select another place adjacent etc..
Handy for tablets with GPS without 3G etc.. Happy
