Apparently, BTJunkie has decided to close rather than risk a similar fate:

Interesting piece on how US law precedents have changed what should be a civil case into a criminal one:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2012/02/is-megaupload-a-lot-less-guilty-than-you-think.ars
Quote:
[Jennifer Granick] makes a similar point about the conspiracy charges facing Megaupload. Conspiracy is a criminal offense, but the government is effectively charging Megaupload's executives with conspiring to commit civil copyright infringement. Yet the conspiracy statute "makes clear that the object of the conspiracy must be an offense or fraud against the United States, in other words, a federal crime," Granick writes. A conspiracy to induce others to commit copyright infringement doesn't qualify.Going to be interesting to see how this plays out, the government could possibly have acted illegally in its reach here.

Seizure order declared null and void:
http://torrentfreak.com/megaupload-seizure-order-null-and-void-says-high-court-120318/
Quote:
On Friday, Justice Judith Potter in the High Court declared the order used to seize Dotcom’s property “null and void” after it was discovered that the police had acted under a court order that should have never been granted.
The error dates back to January when the police applied for the order granting them permission to seize Dotcom’s property. Rather than applying for an interim restraining order, the Police Commissioner applied for a foreign restraining order instead, one which did not give Dotcom a chance to mount a defense.

I'm surprised and frankly disgusted that Paramount seems to be the driving force behind this action. I think it's bad enough that Paramount doesn't take the home entertainment market seriously - they're only interested in selling new films and cash cows and most of their back catalogue of films languishes in the vaults only being exploited by licensees. In their Centenary, the company is releasing a restored handful of important movies, but only to the domestic US market - the rest of the world isn't invited to the party.

I find it's often the small independents that care about the consumer, a few are still misguided and unrealistic, throwing out awful products and/or at inflated prices, but many do an excellent job at giving us what we want at a reasonable price for it.
Perhaps some of them do it because they have to, and others because their motives are less greedy. But I digress...

I really hope they're screwed for as much compensation as possible. Lost the video? Right.
Whilst I'm all for copyright protection in principle, they really have taken the biscuit with these heavy handed approaches. I can't wait til it all falls apart and they start blaming each other.
As for Paramount (whose releases are the worst I can remember ever seeing), I wonder how they'll feel if they're suddenly stung for compensation as well...
